Health Tips for Swimming Pool

                    Health Tips for Swimming Pool

During hot summer days, there is often nothing better than relaxing at the pool. Unfortunately, if you are not careful, swimming pools can be a dangerous place landing you up in accidents or bringing various health hazards.

Few simple actions that can prevent accidents at pools

1)Supervise children at all times when in pool. A responsible adult should be always be in reach of the child, watching the child without distractions like reading or chatting as it may take just few minutes and only few cms of water for your child to get drowned.
2)Make sure at least one responsible adult around knows CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) (can be the trainer)
3)Use the 'buddy system' - even adults should never go alone
4)Keep the pool clear of toys, children may be tempted to enter unsupervised areas and have accidents.
5)Never dive into shallow water, less than 6 ft is too shallow.
6)Stay out of water during thunderstorms.
7)Avoid consuming too much alcohol. Swimming drunk can be as dangerous as driving drunk.
8)Beware of drains. Don't allow children to swim near drains which can trap hairs and body parts by suction. Ensure all drains are covered.
9)Life saving equipment must be ready around.
10)Stay out of water if you are very tired, exhausted, very cold, overheated
11) Don't chew gum or eat while swimming, you could choke.
12)Check for any broken fittings, railings and ladders which can trap small children and injure.
13) Swimming lessons should be given to every swimmer.

How to make swimming a disease free fun as bacteria, fungus, algae, virus all survive quite happily in swimming pools

1)Ensure pool water is properly and regularly filtered and chemically treated. Chlorine levels should be checked two to three times a week and should be between 2-4 ppm and pH levels should be between 7.4-7.6. If needed, superchlorination of water should be done whenever chlorine level falls below 1 ppm. A strong, noxious smell of water indicates more chloramines present (chemicals formed from contact of chlorine with urine, sweat, saliva of humans) and this needs extra amount of chlorine to disinfect water.
2)Refrain from using pool if you are sick, have an open wound, suffering from diarrhoea, respiratory infection, skin disease, urine infection.3)Children wearing diapers shoulder be allowed only if they are wearing swim diapers. 'Bathroom breaks' should be taken by every adult after 60 minutes and by child every 30 minutes.4)Shower or rinse your entire body before and after the pool. Dry the genital area with a towel without rubbing, putting on dry, clean underwear after swimming to avoid vaginal infections and urine infections.5)Do not swallow water, proper swim suits, cap, goggles, ear plugs should be used.6)Avoid swimming following thunderstorm, rains and winds.7)Keep pets out of pool.
